What is the difference?
A wedding planner is a professional that you hire to help you through the entire planning process of your wedding. They begin working with you as soon as you hire them, months, even years before the wedding day. They are not always there on the actual wedding day unless you hire them to do so.
A day-of coordinator is a professional that you hire and work with a few months or weeks in advance of the big day to keep your wedding day or weekend timeline on track. Often doing the “behind the scenes” details, such as lighting candles or refilling the doughnut wall.
A wedding planner will work with you to recommend vendors and venues to fit your vision. They will attend meetings with vendors to help guide you and answer any questions you may have and book the vendors.
A day-of coordinator is there on your wedding day to make sure the vision is brought to life. They do not book the caterer, but they will work alongside them to make sure they have what they need to get the job done and that the meal is served on time and is held to the standard it should be.
Your wedding planner’s job is to help you plan out your day months, even years in advance. Unless you hire them to be there on the day of, they do not actually see the through that the plan is executed.
Day-of coordinators come into the picture a couple of months before the big day and are responsible for making sure the wedding day or weekend is executed perfectly. They oversee vendors, manage the timeline, and solve any last-minute challenges that may arise during the festivities.
Which One is Right For You?
If you have a hard time visualizing a vision for your big day and finding vendors that fit the aesthetic that you are looking for, a wedding planner might be right for you. They can also help you manage your wedding budget. They handle all the stress of the actual planning. Think of them as your new best friend, working closely with you to make sure your day is everything you want it to be.
If you are more of a DIY bride and want to really be involved in the planning process, but don’t want the stress of having to make sure someone has the candles lit before the reception, or that the caterer gets their cheque, a day-of coordinator is right for you. They will work with you in the months leading up to your big day to create a timeline with all the details (you might overlook) and designate who will be taking care of them. On the day of the wedding, they are making sure everything is running as it should “behind the scenes”.
